How to earn and what to track

Ultimate Rewards earning depends on the card and purchase category. Separate a points-generating transaction from a credit-eligible purchase that may not earn. Do not assume every Chase product has the same transfer permissions.

How to evaluate a redemption

Use the transfer preview for your specific card. The 2026 Hyatt changes apply to specified products and account cohorts, so one universal Hyatt ratio would be misleading. Our calculator handles the dated Preferred and Ink Business Preferred cases.

Write down points, required cash, room or cabin, flexibility and the alternative booking you would really buy. Use one currency for cash inputs and the same number of travelers or nights.

Where useful value may appear

Useful opportunities include a genuinely favorable portal offer or a confirmed partner booking after converting the required partner points back into source points. The right choice depends on booking restrictions and your cash alternative.

Treat this as a search strategy rather than a promised sweet spot. Calculate with available inventory and recheck the price immediately before booking.

Status, partners and benefits

Status and lounge privileges, where provided, belong to the card or partner membership rather than the existence of an Ultimate Rewards balance.

Strengths, tradeoffs and fit

ConsiderationPlanning interpretation
StrengthSeveral ways to redeem; card choices at different fees.
TradeoffCard-specific rules and changing offers make old blanket valuations unreliable.
Best fitTravelers whose actual destinations, spending and booking preferences match these rules.

An award price is not the source-point price

Illustrative scenario: a Hyatt booking costs 30,000 hotel points plus $0. At a 1:1 ratio, that requires 30,000 source points; at 4:3, it requires 40,000. Against a $500 realistic cash alternative, the respective source-point values are about 1.67 and 1.25 cents. The hotel award price did not change; the cost to the bank-point balance did.

This example illustrates why the transfer calculator asks for card type, application cohort and transfer date. The announced Chase/Hyatt change is sourced separately; always confirm your personal account preview.

Your next decision

Create two comparable scenarios: an acceptable cash booking and a points booking with all required charges. If a transfer is involved, calculate source points and permitted increments first. Keep a cash fallback.

Record the source and date in your saved plan. Do not store program passwords, account numbers or identity documents here. Our tools are independent worksheets; they cannot confirm your membership eligibility or make a reservation.
