How to earn and what to track
SkyMiles are redeemable rewards; MQDs are the qualification currency used in the published Medallion thresholds. Flight and card activity can have different eligibility rules. Consult your own posted totals.
How to evaluate a redemption
Delta describes multiple redemption choices. Compare the actual points and cash required for an acceptable itinerary, with cabin, baggage and change terms included. Do not treat a general mileage valuation as a ticket price.
Write down points, required cash, room or cabin, flexibility and the alternative booking you would really buy. Use one currency for cash inputs and the same number of travelers or nights.
Where useful value may appear
Look for usable itineraries where miles avoid cash spending you would otherwise incur. A convenient nonstop at a modest valuation may beat a higher theoretical value on an awkward routing.
Treat this as a search strategy rather than a promised sweet spot. Calculate with available inventory and recheck the price immediately before booking.

Redeemable miles are not qualification progress
Illustrative award: a flight is $450 or 35,000 miles plus $12. The simple value is about 1.25 cents per mile. That calculation says nothing about how many MQDs your booking would earn. Consult the fare and Delta rules for qualification credit instead of entering $450 as presumed MQDs.
The planner separates posted MQDs from activity you expect to qualify later. Planned credit does not become confirmed until the airline posts it.
Your next decision
Create two comparable scenarios: an acceptable cash booking and a points booking with all required charges. If a transfer is involved, calculate source points and permitted increments first. Keep a cash fallback.
